About the Louis Bolk Institute

The Louis Bolk Institute is an independent research institute in Driebergen, the Netherlands. Since its formation in 1976 it has encouraged research methods which focus on not only quantitative but also qualitative aspects. The aim of the Louis Bolk Institute is to contribute to the scientific and social needs for innovative research. More and more collaboration grows in research projects where researchers of the institute work together with scientists from other, more conventional, institutes or universities in order to seek new ways for research into questions on health, organic agriculture and wholefood nutrition.

The Agricultural Department at the Louis Bolk Institute was established in 1978. The scientists work to develop and support biodynamic and organic agriculture. To do so, they research locally on farms, participate with farmers to formulate questions to be worked out on the farms, and perform fundamental research. They look at farms as living organic entities, integrated into the larger setting of the surrounding landscape. Depending on the agricultural questions, researchers use both the Goethean method and analytical methods to understand the complexity of the agri-ecosystem. They exchange their knowledge and insights with the farmers and others who are involved.

There are projects in the area of husbandry, horticulture, arable crops, fruitgrowing, with special attention to organic manuring and plant- and animal breeding.
