The Goddesses in the Act of Changing the Reign


Natura and Scientia

The delicately shaped forms of two goddesses--Natura and Scientia--decorate the Nobel Prize medal for chemistry and physics. Their portrayal is remarkable for what it says about humanity's present relationship with the natural world. In an upright stance, Natura embraces a cornucopia in her right arm, while her left hangs limply. She remains passive, holds a steady stare in her gaze. A little below and at Natura's left, Scientia clutches a scroll in her left hand at waist height, while she extends her right arm to Natura's face and lifts the veil. Scientia, caught in the act of exposing Natura's countenance--Natura's secrets, revealed!
